Wow, I love Psalm 18! It has such wonderful encouragements and promises from God, which is timely for each one of us at different points in our lives. Take some time to read through this psalm tonight or tomorrow morning with your family. It is a bit long for little ones (fifty verses), but you can break it up into sections or read it all the way through for family devotions. Here are some of the main promises in these verses:
1. The Lord takes care of those who belong to Him. “I love you, O Lord, my strength,” begins the psalmist. God is our stronghold in every situation! We are not our own strength! Verses 25 and 26a say about God, “With the kind You show Yourself kind; With the blameless You show Yourself blameless; With the pure You show Yourself pure…”
For who is God, but the LORD?
And who is a rock, except our God,
The God who girds me with strength
And makes my way blameless?
Verses 31-32
2. God will bring down our enemies and help us to defeat that which is in opposition to His word: “I pursued my enemies and overtook them, and I did not turn back until they were consumed. I shattered them, so that they were not able to rise; they fell under my feet. For You have girded me with strength for battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.” Verses 37-39
3. God gives us strength! Verse 29 is what we are memorizing with Will right now: “For by You I can run upon a troop; and by my God I can leap over a wall.” He thinks that is pretty amazing!

4. God is deserving of our praise. Verses 3 and 49 are two examples where the psalmist shares this truth. Do you know the song, “I Will Call Upon the Lord“? Try singing it with your children after reading verse three!
5. God rescues us from our distress. Read verses 6 and 48, among others, which witness that truth here in this psalm. “He brought me forth also into a broad place; He rescued me, because He delighted in me.” (verse 19)
Let these verses be an encouragement (and perhaps a battle cry!) for you today.
