As we come into the season of Advent, my family seeks out resources we can use to share the message of the coming Messiah with our kids. Here are some ideas for celebrating Advent that we love!

Advent Devotional – This “Christmas Stories for Bedtime” book is one we enjoyed using last year during December. Each section has a Bible verse relating to Advent/Christmas and then a brief story explaining it (one example is a story about what it was like to be a shepherd). There is a short prayer at the end and then a Christmas hymn. Our favorite part was singing the carols together.

Right now, this book is on sale for $1.99 at Christianbook.com.  There are hundreds of other books, Bibles, and DVDs on sale as well. You can also get free shipping with orders over $35 with code 352495.

Advent Calendar – This is a beautiful Advent Calendar I saw on Pinterest, with an ornament that is removed from the pocket and hung on the tree for each day of December ending on Christmas Day. This year we have an Advent Wreath with little gifts to unwrap each day and a Scripture verse that goes with each one. You could also make a simple advent envelope calendar.

Advent Candles and Wreath -Being my husband is a pastor, we light an Advent candle on each Sunday of Advent during our church service. He uses this as an opportunity to talk about how we prepare our hearts for Jesus’ coming and how the candles symbolize different parts of the Christmas story: the prophecy of Christ, Bethlehem, ETC.

You can make your own wreath! I love these Advent wreath ideas from Lacy at Catholic Icing.

**UPDATE: I found another great Advent devotional idea in my Thriving Family magazine this morning–check it out!

I’d love to know–how do you celebrate Advent with your family?

  1. Thanks for the great links!! Lacy’s advent wreath ideas are wonderful!! We light an Advent candle each week at our church too so I’m excited about helping my kiddos better understand the meaning behind it!!

  2. Our family has really enjoyed having a Jesse Tree. The children have gained much knowledge of Scripture through the creating of ornaments for our Jesse Tree each year. It has been a wonderful way to keep our Christmas preparations and celebration focused of the most wonderful gift of all–JESUS!
