One of the things I’ve been looking forward to doing for a very long time is reorganizing our entryway closet. For about 2 months I’ve been planning, shopping, emailing organizational bloggers for their help and planning some more!

We’ve finally rescued our entryway closet from its former self {see below} and the result is a streamlined, clean {for now} and organized space for all our outerwear and shoes!

Now…before you go thinking that I have one pair of shoes and my husband only wears slippers, the above photo was the staged/Pinterest worthy photo of our closet :) So let’s take a look at the process!

This is what it looked like before:

You see, when we moved into this house, we only had one little boy. After two more children, and consequently more stuff, things spiraled out of control in our front closet.

I had been eyeing the Expedit bookcases from Ikea for a long time. When we made a trip down to visit the in-laws and I was finally near an Ikea, I bought a four-cube unit.

I was so pumped to find the blue bins that I had been drooling over for a couple of months at the Target 5 miles down the road from my in-laws’ house. {I look at everything online because we live in the country, quite a ways from any type of shop-worthy stores.} It was even better to get them on clearance!

The little blue baskets were also on clearance for $2 each and matched perfectly. Add in a heavy-duty Ikea shoe rack, a little wall hanging I’d had in the closet for a couple years and a paint job that took me two days and we had a brand-new space!

I printed little labels to make it easier for the kids to know where to hang their coats.

I kept a few extra hangers for guests, so no more throwing coats on our bed :)

Just a few ways we’re using our bins:

Here’s the final result with a full closet. We keep our wet shoes on a mat by the door {it’s snowy where we live} and our occasionally-worn dress shoes are kept in our bedroom. The kids’ shoes are in the blue baskets and all hats/mitten/scarves are in the brown bins. One bin for the kids, one for the grown-ups!

What space in your house have you rescued from disaster lately? What rooms are you looking forward to organizing this year?

8 Comments on Entryway Closet Rescue: From Cluttered to Clean and Functional

  1. What a beautiful transition. Always nice when we finally get things set up the way we imagine them. The blue is very pretty.

    • Our bedroom closets are so ridiculously small so I’m glad at least our entryway closet is somewhat bigger! Maybe with less space, one collects less stuff, right? ;)
