You may have heard the phrase “the family is under attack” in our culture. And it’s true! There are particular worldviews designed to divide the nuclear family and make it seem like anything qualifies as “family connections”. Thankfully, the way God designed the family provides security, support, and the foundation for good relationships within our family unit.

Since we became parents almost 19 years ago, we’ve realized more and more that the Word of God and prayer are the foundation for a strong family. When we develop a habit of prayer in our homes, what we’re teaching our children is that the Lord is always the ultimate source of strength and that He is our “go-to” in any time of need. Our goal in praying with and for our children is that each one will see the Holy Spirit at work in their lives and place themselves in God’s mighty hands through prayer as they grow into adulthood and start families of their own.
Whether we’re navigating conflicts, celebrating something exciting, or walking through difficult times, prayer is how we seek the peace of God in our homes, strength for our family, and a deeper relationship with Jesus. Praying for our family members not only supports them spiritually but can also transform the dynamics within our households and the family as a whole.
Today I’m sharing some biblical benefits of prayer as well as specific, powerful prayers that can be incorporated into your family’s daily life.

The Importance of Praying for Family Members
- Nurturing Love and Unity: Prayer acts as a reminder of the sacred nature of family relationships. When we pray for our loved ones, we recognize the role they play in our lives and reinforce the ties that bind us. “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. ” Colossians 3:14-15
- Offering Comfort and Support: Life is unpredictable, and family members can face plenty of stress, from health challenges to emotional hardships. Prayer provides a sense of comfort and support that goes beyond the needs we can meet. It’s a way of offering hope and assurance that God is always with them in their struggles. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
- Cultivating Forgiveness and Healing: No family is perfect; misunderstandings, disagreements, and even betrayals can happen. The Holy Spirit has the power to soften hearts, bringing forgiveness and healing. When we pray for our family, especially those we’re in conflict with, we invite peace into our hearts and allow for reconciliation and understanding. Don’t miss out on the blessing of this! The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you, the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26
- Strengthening Faith and Resilience: Praying for others helps strengthen their faith and resilience. Whether through prayer for protection, guidance, or gratitude, invoking divine support can help family members face life’s challenges with confidence and perseverance.
- Creating a Sense of Purpose: Family members are often a source of motivation. By praying for them, we remind ourselves of what’s truly important. Prayer helps keep our priorities in perspective, fostering gratitude for those we love and encouraging us to cherish each moment.
“And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. “
Colossians 3:14-15

Ways to Incorporate Prayer into Family Life
- Create a Family Prayer Time: Dedicate a few minutes each day for family prayer. Depending on your stage of life, this could be at the breakfast table, before you begin your school or homeschool day, or in the evening before bed (more in detail below). This is a powerful way to encourage family unity and it also teaches our kids that we make family prayer a priority.
- Pray Before Meals: Create a daily routine of praying before each meal. You can use a “rote prayer” (such as Come Lord Jesus or The Lord’s Prayer) or take turns having each person offer a prayer of their own.
- Start the Day with Prayer: Take a few moments for a family morning prayer before you start your day. We like to pray for guidance, strength, and wisdom for each of our children and that each of them would see God’s plan for their lives. We pray that God would keep each of us and our extended family safe and healthy. Do what works best for your family!
- End the Day with Prayer: Close out your day with prayer too. Those little moments at the end of the day, when you’re exhausted and just want to go to sleep, are the best times to pray. Give thanks and ask for protection through the night. Have your children share one thing they are thankful for (helping cultivate a grateful heart!). You can also use these Psalms for Bedtime to pray over your children at night when you tuck them in :)
- Prayers for Special Occasions: Pray during birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, or going off to college. Write your prayers on a card and give them to your child.
- Pray for Specific Needs: If a family member is facing a particular challenge (and they will!), dedicate specific prayers for them, focusing on their situation and asking for wisdom or comfort during times of need.

Blessing Verse for Your Family
If you’re looking for a daily prayer that you can pray over your family, use Scripture as your guide. I wrote down Psalm 128:1-6 on a notecard and have been praying these Bible verses over my family the past couple of weeks:
Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in his ways!
You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
around your table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
who fears the Lord.
The Lord bless you from Zion!
May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life!
May you see your children’s children! Peace be upon Israel!
Psalm 128:1-6
Daily Prayers for Family Members: Blessings for Sons and Daughters
Praying for individual family members can offer encouragement during difficult times and demonstrate to each of your children how much you love and think of them throughout the day. I’d encourage you to pray out loud for your children each morning and evening. If your son or daughter is sharing the different needs that they have with you (stress about school work, wanting to play well in their next game, or struggling with getting along with a sibling), having a prayer to speak over your child reminds them that God cares about specific needs that they have.

A Prayer for Strong Family Relationships
Praying for our relationships with each other is so important to my husband and I. We know that it can be a challenge in our busy society to make family a priority. One of best ways to strengthen relationships according to God’s design is to speak truth, love, and unity over our family, and I do believe that we can have a family bond that carries our kids into adulthood. Prayer can also heal broken relationships within a family.
29. Dear Lord, I come before You today, lifting up my whole family and asking for Your guidance and blessing. We know that You are the source of all love, and we seek Your help in strengthening what binds us together. Help us to nurture relationships rooted in Your unconditional love, a love that is patient, kind, and full of grace.
Father, teach us to approach each other with compassion, to listen, and to speak with words that build up and encourage. Forgive us for times when we lose our tempers and create discord. Help us to learn to show understanding when we disagree. Help us to choose forgiveness when hurtful words or actions occur. Let our home be a place where Your love shines brightly, a place of comfort for each member of our family.
Remind us to support one another through life’s challenges and celebrate with each other in success. Help us to always remember that we are a gift to each other, and may we cherish our time together even as life changes and we may not always be together.
Lord, keep our whole family united under Your watchful care. Let Your presence be felt in all that we do, and may Your unconditional love flow through us, teaching us to love and value one another deeply. In Your holy name, we pray.
