I remember making really long Christmas lists as a kid, adding things like Totally Hair Barbie and a Dream Phone, because it was something I just HAD to have ;)
Seriously, remember this?
Fast-forward to adulthood and this year, and my children are adding more modern electronic gifts to their lists….my 10 year old wants an iPod. My 8 year old wants her own Kindle Fire (just to listen to music, Mom!) and the 5 and 3 year old are fully convinced that the electronic talking Paw Patrol puppies will make their life complete.
But one thing that I was really surprised went on their lists?
Audio CDs. Which I thought were not popular among older elementary age kids in the 2010’s ;)
But the particular CDs that are on their list are there for good reason!
For the past 9 months or so, we’ve been listening to audio adventures called The Extraordinary Adventures of G.A. Henty! They bring history to life in dramatic fashion.
What we like is that they’re not audio BOOKS, meaning it’s not just someone reading a story aloud. They are instead dramatic “movies for the ears”, historical events brought to life through excellent narration that ultimately show how God works in the lives of many people throughout Bible times and into the present century.
Their most recent audio adventure is The Cat of Bubastes, which is a story of perseverance, God’s providence and responsibility.
The story takes place at the time that Moses was a king in Egypt, where the young prince Amuba and his faithful mentor Jethro are captured by the Egyptians and enslaved in the beautiful city of Thebes. They soon find themselves trapped in a murderous plot to attack the family of their Egyptian friend, which will severely test their loyalty. Along the way, these men discover the wonder of God’s providence. Created from one of G.A. Henty’s most popular novels, this audio adventure is very exciting from beginning to end!
My 10 and 8 year old have been listening to this every morning as I drive them to and from school–for a month! They keep wanting the same story over and over again, and I’m so thankful that they’re learning world history as well as being able to grow in their understanding of God’s purpose and plan throughout time. (My kids didn’t want to get out of the car when we got to school the first morning they were listening to it!).
The Cat of Bubastes is recommended for ages 6 and up and I feel that is a very sound recommendation. My 5 year old finds the story to be a bit too much for him with some of the dramatic scenes. But if you have kids who are six and older, this is a perfect idea for a Christmas gift.
And speaking of Christmas gifts, since these audio adventures are on our kids’ list this year, they’ll be getting a few more of these fabulous G.A. Henty stories! They’re great for long drives to see family this holiday season!
The folks at Heirloom Audio have a special offer on the Cat of Bubastes with bonuses for my readers! Click here to find out more about that (it provides a great opportunity for giving someone else the gift of audio adventures too!)
I hope you get to enjoy these audio adventures with your kids! It’s something they can enjoy many times over and will become a new favorite while also teaching historical truth with a Biblical perspective!
