Pray for your babies even before they arrive! 14 Scriptures you can pray over your unborn child, for their health, spiritual well-being and more!

Part of preparing ourselves for a new little one is spending time in prayer for our baby’s health and spiritual well-being. A couple of months ago, I was convicted that I wasn’t spending much time in prayer for the baby specifically. We included the baby in prayers for our family but I wanted to be more intentional about speaking Scripture over my unborn child!

I spent some time looking through my Bible and using Bible Gateway to find some beautiful passages that speak precious promises and God’s truth over your baby! You can certainly pray these over all of your children, as we know that the Word of God accomplishes the purpose for which it was sent (Isaiah 55:11-12) and that Scripture prayed over your family has great power.

Further down this post, you’ll find the link to download the printable prayer cards!

I’ve also created a free printable with the fourteen verses I chose in case you would like to print it out and have it nearby when you have prayer time (it’s an 8×10 so you could trim and frame it or put it in a page protector as is). They are mostly NASB and NKJV with a KJV verse thrown in because I liked the way it was phrased better than the other versions.

I’m planning to use these at night before bed and hopefully can include my older children in praying these over the baby during devotions. They are wonderful for memorization as well and can easily be used in a two-week cycle. Below are the verses I chose, feel free to look them up in your favorite version!

14 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Unborn Baby

Psalm 139:14 – “I will give thanks to you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.”

Philippians 1:6 – “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in your will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Psalm 127:3-5 – “Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.”

3 John 4 – “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.”

Isaiah 54:13 – “All thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of Thy children.”

Psalm 90:17 – “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; and confirm for us the work of our hands; yes, confirm the work of our hands.”

2 Peter 3:18 – “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”

Psalm 138:8 – “The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; do not forsake the works of Your hands.”

2 Thessalonians 3:3 – “But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.”

Colossians 2:2 – “That their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself.”

Titus 3:5-6 – “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”

Psalm 37:23 – “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.”

Psalm 145:4 – “One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.”

1 Samuel 1:27 – “For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him.”

You’ll notice almost half of them are from the Psalms. I love how the poetry and promises of this book of the Old Testament!

There are many, many verses that I’m sure I have not included, so if you have some that you currently pray over your children, please feel free to mention them in the comments!

  1. Thanks for this post! I love your printable. It’s pretty enough to frame and set by my bed. I need the reminder! I love 1 Samuel 1:27. Cupcake came so quickly after Rooter everybody always asks if she was a “surprise”. No way! I prayed for that little girl. I asked for her and the Lord was answered our prayer.

  2. I love this! Thank you so much for the printable! Psalm 139:14 is one of my favorite verses. It has gotten me through some really rough times, and I really like the idea of praying it for my little one!

    Thanks again! :)

  3. Beyond amazing. Thanks for sharing. We pray scripture each day over our kids, but want to add these too!

    Beyond delighted to meet you.

I hope you don’t mind if I splash around to get to know you. This looks like a refreshing place to dip into some serious goodness.

You splashed me with encouragement today. I would be honored if you would splash other mommas as well with this post or another fave. We gather for momma notes. I jot some on Mondays, but it’s a link up whenever you can kind of link up. Just moms. Sharing our notes. Creating a melody.

I love your list. While I was pregnant, here are some of the other verses I prayed over both Baby and myself!
    Ps. 147:13
    Deut. 7:13a
    Isaiah 44:3
    Ps. 115:14-15
Isaiah 65:23 (This one was a big deal for us, since we were praying for a pain-free childbirth!)

    Great post!

  5. Prayer is really important over an unborn baby. Love the verses you provided. It’s funny when people ask me if our soon to be baby name will be. I say Adam. They say oh you’ll change you mind. I say no because I asked God what should this babies name be and he said Adam. They often give me an odd look. Praying over a child’s name is just as important also.

  6. This is a wonderful list! I just printed it out to add to the list of scriptures I’m praying over Baby #2. With #1, my most frequent prayer was 1 Samuel 2:26, that our baby would “grow in stature and favor with God and with men.”

  7. Thank you for this list!! I just received my 5 positive tests yesterday (!!!) & will be printing this out today! I think I’ll add a copy to the baby book as well :)

    • Congratulations Heather! How exciting! I hope the Scriptures will be encouraging for you as you wait for your little one.
